CHEVELLE SS LS6

Description

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe SS LS6
The 1970s dawned with a “big bang” for GM fans, as the corporate policy of a maximum 400 CI displacement limit in midsize cars finally ended. The various GM brands went far over their Ford and Chrysler competition, all offering 450-plus cubes immediately. For Chevrolet's enthusiast base, cars like this incredible two-owner Chevelle hosted the new 454 CI Turbo Jet, offered in its ultimate 450 HP LS6 format here. The LS6 engine, coupled to the RPO Z15 SS454 package it mandated and whatever transmission choice was made, added well over $700 to the base Chevelle cost. This car—already given a professional nut-and-bolt, rotisserie, body-off restoration—is documented with its build sheet and Protect-O-Plate, ensuring its provenance. Original delivered and sold at Reedman Chevrolet of Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
Under the just-released 1970 hood with fresh-air cowl induction is the original matching-numbers 454/450 HP V-8 engine, a one-year offering that truly made the newly restyled Chevelle a standout on the cruise circuit, highway or drag strip. Featuring a factory Winters Foundry-cast aluminum intake, Holley 4-barrel carburetor, factory emissions equipment and dual exhaust ending in chrome tips, it quickly became a legend. The LS6 is backed here by a TH400 automatic transmission and 12-bolt differential, and this car has both power steering and power brakes with front discs.
The car is cloaked in Fathom Blue, highlighted with white stripes and a black bench-seat interior. Highlights inside are the 120-mph speedometer with five-digit odometer shows 69k miles, in-dash tachometer, AM radio, SS steering wheel, rubber floor mats and the nice overall detailing. The exterior is brightened with rechromed bumpers, the cowl induction hood with tags and hold-down hood pins, the SS454 fender emblems, premium chrome trim and a set of 5-spoke SS wheels. Add on those Firestone Wide Oval raised white-letter tires and you're looking at the way it was back in the day. The sale will include the aforementioned items, original build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, factory owner's manual and a binder holding this car's documentation. The bench seat kept the girlfriend (or boyfriend) close, and that fresh sound of 454 CI drawing in air kept everybody else away—far away.
The Ultimate Muscle Car, the 1970 LS6 Chevelle was America's King of the Streets. The past is gone, and the future may never see a car like this. It is one of the brutes the most commanding muscle car ever manufactured.
